Welcome to Atmospheric Effects on Electromagnetic Systems

Welcome to Atmospheric Effects on Electromagnetic Systems

Navy Warfare Development Command

Learning Objectives

  • You will use information about the sun and ionosphere to predict how and why HF transmissions vary with time of day, latitude and season.
  • You will predict how local atmospheric conditions can bend electromagnetic transmissions and how this influences VHF, UHF and SHF radar target detection, electronic surveillance measures, jamming and radio communications.
  • You will understand how changes in wind speed, temperature and humidity near the surface control the evaporation duct which results in greatly extended ranges for higher frequency radio and radar transmissions.
